“Alpine Reverie” is an original painting by Alison C. Dibble, oil on cradled panel, 11x14 inches, painted in 2020. It is a unique, one-of-a-kind, fine art painting. This landscape was from the artist’s memory, based on hiking above tree line on Katahdin and Mt. Washington and in high passes in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado. In any high elevation area within their mind, an observer could “walk” into the painting and continue on up the slope to take in the vast sweeping views at the summit.
I painted this while reminiscing about my many times exploring plants, mosses and lichens above treeline in the alpine zone in the Northeastern U.S. and in the Rocky Mountains. I like to paint from my memory and my imagination, where I feel completely free to increase the intensity of colors, and to capture the way the light falls on the landforms. I like to make a way for the viewer to enter the painting, as though swept along by some enticing bird call, or following an alpine bee or butterfly as it skips over the vegetation. Painting may be hard work for some artists, but looking at the painting can be a rest for the eyes. I like to think that Alpine Reverie is a calming presence in the room.
