I was on a small pond in Blue Hill, Maine to check for a native bee that can sometimes be seen on water lily flowers. The water lilies were exquisite! I was in my one-person canoe taking pictures and reaching, reaching. But I went past the balance threshold and tipped over the canoe. Now I was standing, barefoot, in some kind of slimy bottom stuff on the pond bottom. It was only about 4 feet deep but my immediate thought was, “there could be snakes!” so I scrambled to get back in the boat. Meanwhile, camera, paints, lunch, binoculars, hat…all tipped out and needing to be gathered back up. Happily, it was a hot day, the camera was waterproof, and nothing was damaged, just my pride. Soon I was back to taking more pictures.
