Monhegan is an island 10 miles off the coast of Maine. It has a rich history of fishing, and of attracting artists. For many decades the artists have come to depict the steep rocky coast, the charming village, the fishermen and women, and the other friendly people.
I had the good fortune of staying for a few days with my artist friends in an unusual ocean-side house, a former fish shack that had been converted to a vacation home in the early 1900s. This Monhegan seaside cottage was at one time available for rent, though it might not be any longer. I painted some of the iconic views of the island, and of course I had to paint Wik Wak. In fact we each did! No one’s painting was similar to any other, and that was a testament to the individualist approaches of the artists.
