Spring runoff

How to get the background to the recede, and to give the illusion of rapidly moving water? Ah, the pleasures of plein air painting.

Description

Spring runoff, by Alison C. Dibble, is an original oil painting, one-of-a-kind, 11 x 14 inches, and has already found a home.  Thank you.

In a multi-day spell of wet spring weather, heavy rains had swollen the streams. I got the idea that I ought to go check this waterfall. There was a possibility it could be dramatic and pounding. I hiked in through the woods with my easel and paints, and I was not disappointed. The spray from the roaring falls dampened my face. I painted quickly before another shower began. How to make the background recede, and to convey the motion of the water in a 2-dimensional medium? It was fun to try!
