Fine art oil painting. Before the birthday roses could be given away, they had to get painted.
Yes, there really is a Michelle, and these were indeed her roses, purchased from our local florist who is a talented artist in her own right. We had just a few hours before we would attend her birthday party, so I set them up with a strong light on them and painted quickly with the palette knife and some stiff brushes. I painted over a painting of a horse-drawn sleigh which I considered expendable, and tilted it up on its end so that the strong verticals of that painting became an underlying structure for this painting.
Though the rich apricot and red-tinged orange colors were what drew me, it was the contrast in textures between fern and flowers that held my interest. And yes, Michelle liked them!
